The Quran’s statement that God neither begets nor is begotten (112:3), directed at the belief that God has a son in a literal sense.

What it means

“He neither begets nor is begotten” (112:3). “It is not for God to take a son; glory be to Him” (19:35). “How could He have a son when He has no consort?” (6:101). Muslims read these as rejecting the idea of a child born to God by generation. The Bible uses “son of God” of Israel (Exodus 4:22), of kings (Psalm 2:7), and of the righteous.

What the sources say

Muslims distinguish this from the language of the prophets, who used “son” as a metaphor of love and nearness. The Quran’s objection is to the claim that the Son shares in God’s own being, a claim it says nothing in creation can fit (19:88–93).
