The Quran forbids infanticide, honours daughters, and asks that children be nursed and provided for.
What it means
The Quran condemns the pre-Islamic practice of burying baby girls alive: “when the girl buried alive is asked for what sin she was killed” (81:8–9). It says “do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We provide for them and for you” (17:31). Mothers may nurse for two years (2:233). The Prophet said that whoever raises two girls until they reach adulthood will come on the Day of Resurrection beside him, and he held two fingers together (Sahih Muslim).
