Dīn

“Religion”: the way of life and the accounting before God; also law, custom and obedience.

What it means

Dīn in the Quran means the religion God revealed (3:19, “the religion with God is Islam”), the Day of Judgement (yawm al-dīn, 1:4) and a way of life. Muhammad’s message is “the guidance and the religion of truth” (9:33). Muslims distinguish islām, submission to God; īmān, faith; and iḥsān, excellence.

What the sources say

The verse “the religion with God is Islam” (3:19) uses the word in its general sense of submission to God, which the Quran says all the prophets practised: Abraham was “a Muslim” in this sense (3:67), and the apostles of Jesus said “we are Muslims” (3:52).
