عيد

ʿĪd

The two Muslim festivals: Eid al-Fitr, at the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, at the Hajj.

What it means

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first of Shawwal, and Eid al-Adha on the tenth of Dhu al-Hijja. Each begins with a congregational prayer in the morning, followed by a sermon. Fitr is preceded by zakāt al-fiṭr, a charity for the poor, and Adha recalls Abraham’s offering by the sacrifice of an animal, a third of which is given to the poor.

What the sources say

Anas reports that when the Prophet came to Medina, the people had two days of play, and he said that God had given them two better days, the Eid of sacrifice and the Eid of breaking the fast (Abu Dawud).
