عزير

ʿUzayr

Person

The Quran says “the Jews say Uzayr is the son of God” (9:30); Muslim commentators relate this to a particular group.

What it means

“The Jews say: ‘Uzayr is the son of God’, and the Christians say: ‘the Messiah is the son of God’” (9:30). Commentators such as Ibn Abbas relate it to a few Jews of Medina and elsewhere in Arabia. Ezra the scribe is held in great honour in Judaism for restoring the Torah after the exile, and later Jewish writings exalt him.

Often misunderstood as

That the Quran makes an error about Jewish belief.

What the sources say

The Quran does not say that all Jews held this, and the text says “the Jews say”, as the Bible uses “the Jews” for particular groups. No scholar claims Judaism teaches it, and Muslims do not. The matter is taken up in the article linked here.
