The Quran calls the time between death and resurrection a barrier (barzakh, 23:100), and burial is simple.
What it means
“Before them is a barrier (barzakh) until the day they are resurrected” (23:100). Hadith describe the questioning of the dead by two angels in the grave and ease or distress according to deeds (Sahih al-Bukhari). The Prophet prayed over the grave of a black woman who swept the mosque and whose death had gone unnoticed (Sahih al-Bukhari), and forbade building over graves. He permitted visiting graves, as a reminder of death (Sahih Muslim).
