The Prophet’s younger grandson (626–680), killed at Karbala, whose death Muslims regard as a great crime.
What it means
Husayn, son of Ali and Fatima, was loved by the Prophet, who called him and Hasan “the masters of the youth of Paradise” (al-Tirmidhi). After Muawiya’s death in 680 he refused to give allegiance to Yazid and was killed with his small band at Karbala on the tenth of Muharram, 61 AH.
What the sources say
Ashura is also the day on which, by a report in Sahih al-Bukhari, Moses was saved from Pharaoh, and the Prophet encouraged fasting on it.
