الخضر
al-Khiḍr
Person
A servant of God, named in the Quran only as one of “Our servants” (18:65), whose journey with Moses is told in chapter 18.
What it means
Moses met “a servant of Ours to whom We had given mercy from Us and taught knowledge from Us” (18:65), and asked to follow him to learn. The man damaged a boat, killed a boy and rebuilt a wall, each for a reason he explained afterwards. Moses could not be patient, and so they parted (18:60–82). The Prophet named him Khidr in a hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari).
What the sources say
Scholars differ on whether Khidr was a prophet, a saint or an angel, and whether he is alive. The story’s point is that a human being’s knowledge is limited, and that what looks like harm may hold a hidden good.
