Marriage is a solemn covenant in Islam, based on mutual consent, a dowry, and mercy between the spouses.

What it means

“Among His signs is that He created for you spouses from yourselves that you may find rest in them, and put between you love and mercy” (30:21). Both parties must consent, and the bride receives a dowry for herself (4:4). The Prophet encouraged marriage, calling it half of the faith in some reports, and said, “The best of you is the best to his wives” (al-Tirmidhi).
