ʿidda
The waiting period a woman observes after divorce or the death of her husband.
What it means
A divorced woman waits three monthly cycles (2:228), a widow four months and ten days (2:234), and a pregnant woman until she delivers (65:4). The wisdom is to be sure of paternity, to give husband and wife time to reconcile, and for a widow to mourn. During it the husband must provide for a divorced wife and not force her out (65:1, 65:6).
