إبراهيم
Ibrāhīm
Person
The infant son of the Prophet and Mariya, who died at about eighteen months.
What it means
Ibrahim was born in Medina in 8 AH to Mariya al-Qibtiyya. When he died the Prophet wept, and said: “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord. O Ibrahim, we are grieved at your parting” (Sahih al-Bukhari). He was told that Ibrahim would have a nurse in Paradise to complete his nursing (Sahih Muslim).
Often misunderstood as
A solar eclipse occurred on the day of his death, and some people said it was for his sake. The Prophet answered that the sun and moon are signs of God and do not eclipse for anyone’s death or life (Sahih al-Bukhari), and so refused a cheap miracle at his moment of grief.
