The Prophet taught that the sun and moon eclipse by God’s decree and not for anyone’s birth or death, and prescribed a special prayer.

What it means

When the Prophet’s infant son Ibrahim died, an eclipse of the sun happened the same day, and people said it was for his death. The Prophet answered: “The sun and the moon do not eclipse for the death or life of anyone; they are two signs of God. When you see them, pray” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

What the sources say

The hadith is cited as an example of the Prophet rejecting a superstition that would have favoured him, at a moment of grief. The eclipse prayer is a sunna of two long units.
