Islam makes seeking knowledge a duty, and Muslim societies built schools, libraries and universities.

What it means

The first revelation begins “Read” (96:1). The Prophet freed Badr captives who could teach ten Muslims to read (Musnad Ahmad). The madrasa system, from the eleventh century, set up endowed schools, and al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859, is often called the oldest continuously operating university.
