محمد

Muḥammad

Prophet

The final prophet of Islam (570–632), to whom the Quran was revealed.

What it means

Born in Mecca, orphaned young and known as al-Amin, “the trustworthy”, he received the first revelation in the cave of Hira at about forty. After thirteen years of preaching and persecution he migrated to Medina in 622, and returned to Mecca in 630, forgiving his enemies. He died in 632. The Quran calls him “a mercy to the worlds” (21:107) and “an excellent example” (33:21).
