مؤمنة
Muʾminah
A woman who has iman, faith; the plural is muʾmināt.
What it means
Muʾminah is the feminine of muʾmin: a woman who holds īmān, faith. The Quran addresses women and men together, with the same standing before God. One verse lists them side by side: the Muslim men and women, the believing men and women, and so on through the qualities of devotion, truthfulness, patience, humility and remembrance, and it promises forgiveness and a great reward to them all (33:35). Another verse says that the believing men and women are protectors of one another, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong (9:71). The plural, muʾmināt, is used for believing women as a group.
Often misunderstood as
The Quran’s address to “the believing men and women” is sometimes missed in translations that render the masculine plural alone.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 24, listed as MU'MINAH. The definition is restated here.
