قريش
Quraysh
Group
The leading tribe of Mecca, guardians of the Kaaba and the tribe of the Prophet.
What it means
The Quran has a surah named for them, which reminds them of the security of their trade caravans and bids them “worship the Lord of this House” (106:1–4). The Prophet belonged to the clan of Hashim. Most Quraysh opposed him for years and many entered Islam after the conquest of Mecca in 630.
