رزق

Rizq

What God grants a person out of His material bounty: sustenance, provision and livelihood.

What it means

Rizq is what God provides to His creatures from His bounty: food, wealth, health and all that sustains life. In Islamic teaching it comes from God, who is the Provider, while a person is still told to work to earn it. The Quran says that no creature moves on the earth without its provision resting with God (11:6), and describes Him as the Provider, firm in strength (51:58). The Quran also asks believers to spend from the rizq that God has given them, so that wealth is a trust and a means of doing good.

Often misunderstood as

That it is only money or income, when it covers every provision that God grants.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 33, listed as RIZQ. The definition is restated here.
