توكل
Tawakkul
Absolute confidence that Allah is the cause of all that is or will be, together with reliance upon Him as such
What it means
Tawakkul is reliance on Allah. It rests on the belief that He is the cause of everything that exists or will exist, and it leads the believer to place the outcome of his effort in His hands. The Quran says “when you have decided, put your trust in Allah” (3:159) and “whoever relies on Allah, He is sufficient for him” (65:3). Scholars teach that tawakkul follows effort and does not replace it: a person plans and acts, and then entrusts the result to Allah. A saying attributed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and recorded in al-Tirmidhi tells a man to tie his camel and then trust in Allah.
Often misunderstood as
That it means fatalism or passivity, when the sources join reliance on Allah to effort.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 47, listed as TAWAKKUL. The definition is restated here.
