al-Ghālib

Topic

A divine name meaning He Who always prevails, the One Who conquers.

What it means

Al-Ghālib is the active participle of ghalaba, to overcome. The Quran says: “God prevails over His affair, but most people do not know” (12:21). The sense is that no force can hinder what He has decreed. It is not found in the commonly counted list of the ninety-nine names, and is a descriptive name drawn from this verse. The name is therefore an assurance that no hostile force will finally overturn His will.

The Quran gives the promise that follows from it: “God has decreed: I shall surely prevail, I and My messengers” (58:21). The verse offers comfort to believers who face a stronger party, as Joseph did when his brothers plotted against him. The name should be read with al-ʿAzīz, the Almighty, and al-Qahhār, the Subduer, which are closely related names. For this reason, the early Muslims drew confidence from it in times of hardship.

Often misunderstood as

Taken as a license for aggression; the Quran uses the name to assure the faithful that God’s purpose will prevail.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 41, listed as AL GHĀLIB. The definition is restated here.
