يأجوج ومأجوج
Yājūj wa-Mājūj
Topic
Two destructive peoples that the Quran says were walled off by Dhu al-Qarnayn, to break out near the end of time (18:94–99, 21:96).
What it means
People complained to Dhu al-Qarnayn that Gog and Magog were “corrupters on the earth”, and asked him to build a barrier. He built it of iron and molten copper and said: “This is a mercy from my Lord; when my Lord’s promise comes, He will make it level” (18:94–98). The Quran says that when they are released they will rush down from every height (21:96). A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari speaks of a breach in the wall, and one in Sahih Muslim of their emergence after the Dajjal.
What the sources say
Ezekiel 38–39 and Revelation 20 also speak of Gog and Magog, and Muslims see this as part of a shared tradition of the end of time. Scholars differ on whether the wall is a historical structure, a figure for the barrier between order and chaos, or a reality of the unseen.
