The Quran does not call God “Father”, to rule out the idea that He has children, but calls Him Lord, Merciful and Loving.
What it means
The Quran’s names for God include al-Raḥmān, al-Raḥīm, al-Wadūd (the Loving, 85:14) and al-Ghafūr. The Prophet said: “God is more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child” (Sahih al-Bukhari), after seeing a mother searching for her lost baby.
Often misunderstood as
That in Islam God is distant and unloving.
What the sources say
Islam avoids “Father” for God because of the Quran’s statement “He neither begets nor is begotten” (112:3), which excludes a literal fatherhood. The Bible itself uses “Father” also in a figurative sense of care. A believer in Islam speaks to God directly and with love: “say: if you love God, follow me, and God will love you” (3:31).
