The Gospel: the revelation God gave to Jesus, which the Quran says confirmed the Torah.
What it means
The Quran says God gave Jesus the Gospel, “in it guidance and light, confirming the Torah” (5:46), and tells “the people of the Gospel” to judge by what God revealed in it (5:47). Muslims understand the Injīl as the message revealed to Jesus himself, not as the four Gospels, which are accounts about him by his followers.
Often misunderstood as
That Muslims have no use for the Gospels, or say they simply contradict the Quran.
What the sources say
Muslim scholars through the centuries have quoted the Gospels, for instance on the sayings of Jesus, and many see in them a record that carries much true teaching. They differ with the Christian view on the cross and on Jesus’ nature. The question of what became of the original Gospel is taken up in the article linked here.
