Jadīdiyya

Group

A reform movement among Muslims of the Russian Empire in the late nineteenth century.

What it means

The Jadids, led by figures such as Ismail Gasprinski (1851–1914), set up “new method” schools that taught reading by sound, along with science, geography and languages, in place of rote learning only. They also printed newspapers and argued that Islam, rightly understood, calls for learning.
