ربنا هب لنا من أزواجنا وذرياتنا قرة أعين واجعلنا للمتقين إماما
Rabbanā Hab Lanā min Azwājinā wa Dhurriyyātinā Qurrata Aʿyunin wa Ijʿalnā lil-Muttaqīna Imāman
“Our Lord, grant that our spouses and children be a joy to us, and make us leaders of the God-fearing”; said when speaking of spouses or children.
What it means
This is a supplication from the Quran, in which believers ask God for spouses and offspring who will be a comfort to the eyes, a joy and a source of pride, and for the grace to be leaders of the muttaqīn, those mindful of God. It appears at 25:74 in the description of the servants of the Most Merciful. Muslims say it in any conversation about wives, husbands or children, and parents recite it as a prayer for their family, asking that those closest to them be pious and that they themselves be an example to others.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 63, listed as RABBANĀ HAB LANĀ MIN AZWĀJINĀ WA DHURRIYYATINĀ QURRATA A‘YUNIN WA IJA‘ALNĀ LIL MUTTAQĪNA IMĀMAN.. The definition is restated here.
