Book

The scripture of Christians. Muslims honour the Torah and Gospel as revealed, and hold that the Bible as it is now includes later human additions.

What it means

The Bible has two parts: the Old Testament (39 books in the Protestant canon) and the New Testament (27). Catholic and Orthodox churches count more books in the Old Testament. Muslims believe in the Torah given to Moses and the Gospel given to Jesus (5:44–46), and say that the Quran confirms what is true in them and guards it (5:48).

What the sources say

The Quran tells the People of the Gospel to judge by what God revealed in it (5:47) and tells the Prophet to ask those who have read the Book before him (10:94). Muslims read the Bible with respect, and differ with Christians over the cross, the Trinity and the nature of Jesus.
