خيبر
Khaybar
Event
An oasis north of Medina, where Muslims fought a campaign in 628–629 against a fortified group of the Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir and others.
What it means
After the Treaty of Hudaybiyya the Prophet marched against Khaybar, whose people had joined the coalition against Medina at the Trench. The fortresses fell after weeks of siege, and he let the inhabitants stay and work the date palms for half the produce. The Quran refers to the victory in 48:18–21.
What the sources say
Reports differ about the terms and the later events, including the poisoned lamb offered to the Prophet and the order of Umar in 641 to remove the Jews of Khaybar from Arabia. Historians read them in the context of the war, and the hostilities arose from the alliance with the enemies of Medina.
