The Quran honours Jews as People of the Book and descendants of the prophets, and it speaks of them in praise and in criticism.
What it means
“Those who believe, the Jews, the Christians and the Sabians, whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good, shall have their reward with their Lord” (2:62; also 5:69). “Among the People of the Book are some who, if you trust them with a heap of gold, return it” (3:75). The Prophet stood up for the funeral procession of a Jew and said, “Is it not a soul?” (Sahih al-Bukhari). Jewish scholars flourished under Muslim rule, as Maimonides did in Cairo.
Often misunderstood as
The Quran’s criticisms address specific acts of some groups at the time of the revelation, and are paralleled by criticisms of Muslims; the Quran also speaks of the faithful among them (3:113–115). Hatred of Jews as a people has no basis in the Quran, and is rejected by mainstream scholars.
