Yūnus

Prophet

The prophet swallowed by a fish, who called out in the darkness and was saved; the tenth surah is named for him.

What it means

“And Dhu al-Nun, when he went off in anger, thinking We would not constrain him; then he cried out in the darknesses: ‘There is no god but You, glory be to You, I have been one of the wrongdoers.’ We answered him and saved him from distress” (21:87–88). He was sent to a hundred thousand or more (37:147), and they believed and were spared (10:98). The Prophet said not to prefer him over Jonah (Sahih al-Bukhari), a lesson of humility among prophets.

What the sources say

The Quran says Jonah was cast on a bare shore while ill (37145), and God made a gourd tree grow over him; the supplication of 21:87 is a favourite of Muslims in distress.
