مسجد
masjid
Place
A place of prostration: the house of prayer, and the centre of community life.
What it means
“The mosques are for God, so do not call on anyone else along with God” (72:18). The Prophet’s own mosque in Medina was a simple building with palm trunks, and also served as a school and a council. The earth is a place of prayer, and a mosque is not needed for a valid prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari). Men and women may attend, and the Prophet said: “Do not prevent the female servants of God from the mosques of God” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 34, listed as MASJID. The definition is restated here.
